Context

Canon introduced the Canon EF mount with the Canon EOS system in 1987. The interface replaced mechanical linkages with digital communication across fixed electrical contacts. The mount geometry and contact layout formed a stable boundary between body and lens.

Canon planned the mount as a long-lived platform. Internal statements and later product strategy indicate intent for multi-decade reuse, but no public target lifetime was declared. The design removed mechanical dependencies to avoid legacy constraints and to enable future autofocus and control features.
